You guys will laugh at me, but I'm a super beginner and not devoted to it.

Every time we're in a new country I keep the coins I get.
So, I have some 50p pieces from the UK (They don't make the boxy ones anymore), I have some 1 pound notes from the UK (supposedly they don't use them anymore too). I have some french coins from the 80's and various othe countries coins.

Nothing really old, just stuff that I kept.

So, do serious collectors laugh at me? Or do they say keep on keeping them and someday you might get something worthwhile?

Great for you, the coins and currency you have are a great start, beginner or long time colletor no ones is going to laugh at you. Who knows with the euro now out your coins may be worth alot someday. I collect what I like, I do have some investment coins, gold mostly, but most of what i have is because of the history of the coins, I have some coins from the 1860's and like to think of who may have had that coin during the civil war. Also the coins are like a memory of the countrys you have been to, enjoy them. I will be going to Scotland and Ireland next year and will be getting some coins from there to remember the trip.

the neat thing about the scots (or the UK in general) is that the banks issue currency. NOT the government!
So, who knows what you can find in circulation :-)

I'm in the same boat, I have been doing this on and off for many years, but only recently decided to actually put the collection into sensible sleeves for protection. I collect both coins and notes - again though, whichever takes my fancy at the time. For example, I figured the Irag notes might be on interest / value one day. I have a binder of worldwide coins, and 2 UK binders, as well as a binder of notes from around the world.
Looking for a local school kids I guess as I have loads of doubles. Kids dont seem to collect coins / stamps like they used to.

I used to collect a little more seriously, but even when I was actually buying coins, I wasn't spending lots of money. I would buy an occasional coin because I liked it and could afford it, or I'd go through the local dealer's "junk foreign" box, and find some interesting older coins and add a few that were pretty or from countries I didn't have. Historical interest counts for me as much as rarity, and there are some historically interesting coins which are rather inexpensive.

These days, I'm limited mostly to collecting new state quarters as I receive them, and anything interesting which crosses my pocket. Though I did add a few Colombian coins and notes when I visited recently.
